Wow just got Studio Pro Demo going on Linux Mint and Wine 1.1.31. I have the same issues with the black boxes but everything else seems ok...

Linum Mint is worth a look guys... It's based on Ubuntu and seems well supported.

Thanks for the info, would have taken me ten times as long to figure it all out myself!

I just created a dual boot with Mint and would like to get some Rage in there. Are there really no other issues? How extensively have you tested it? Now I just have to get my tablet working properly :/ .

    Hi folks,

I haven't been around for ages... I managed to get ArtRage 2.5 to run under Wine back when it first came out. Naturally I'm interested in AR3 too I bought ArtRage Studio Pro with the update discount a while ago, I was just too busy to actually upgrade and 2.5 does most of the things I want it to already. But before I try to get AR3 to run under Wine (I'm quite busy so it might not be soon...) I have a question for those of you who've already set it up.

I'm worried about performance issues. The watercolor brush in particular looks like it might eat my tablet PC for lunch! I have a Thinkpad X60T and ArtRage 2.5 works quite well under Wine (with occasional lag for large brushes).

So can anyone try this - make an image 1600px*1200px*150 dpi (that's really the smallest I can get sizewise for my current project), try to use watercolors and post your hardware config? I'm really curious as to how slow it gets, especially on portable devices.

I tried AR3 under Windows and I think I can do without the other new features on my laptop for the time being (my desktop is dual boot so I can just run Windows) so if the watercolors are slooooow then I think I'll wait for a black boxes fix before upgrading from 2.5.

I'd be extremely thankful for any input it would save me a lot of time and it just takes a few minutes to check if you already have AR3 installed.
    ArtRage 2.5 / Debian lenny / Thinkpad X60T / Life is shiny!!

found a new problem in artrage 3 with wine. Using the demo version, while drawing:

if I edit>copy , artrage would just close. Thankfully on the next startup, it would restore my progress. This saved me almost half an hour of work. Thanks for the awesome design!

and installing corefonts with winetricks still doesnt fix it for me. I still can not export any images under linux

Was thinking about trying linux ....

Do you know if a major vender version of XP such as HP, or DELL works with virtualbox in Linux or must you have an OEM vanilla version of XP? I've got old pcs that I'd like to install Linux on, and have extra licenses from bundled versions. I think some of these versions were in some way tied to the hardware, and I don't know if VirtualBox can handle some of those issues.

sorry for the technical question tangential to this topic.

I use Virtual box and it works .
What scare me is the words old pc,s !
Running linux make a old pc good again but running a virtual machine
need extra cpu power and memory.
    i use ubuntu on a dual core 2.8 1 G ram.
And can run xp virtual with not much problems.
    Hope this helps.

Hope AR bring out a *real* linux version

Well, I got it to work on wine 1.2 on Mint 9 KDE RC. There are black boxes and I haven't tested extensively, but it seems to be workable at least. A big plus on KDE is that the wacom kcm drivers give full functionality to the wacom buttons under linux.

A little communication between the wine and artrage developers might go a long way

Unfortunately, importing an image file crashes every time. That kind of kills it for me. Too bad, I really want to use it under Linux.

    linux support is not there

I too have issue with export which the 'workaround' did not fix. I am on full version artrage not demo. If I can't export it is screenshots only which is just silly. In fairness this is probably a wine bug not artrage however it's a shame given this excellent prog is ALMOST over the line to use with linux.

I have noticed the pressure picks up easy on tools but doesn't drop off easy - using a tablet. I haven't tried to see how this compares running in Windows.

import and export broken same way

You're right Import broken as well

    IMPORT
'Art rage failed to open a location on the disk. You may need to restart the application.'

    EXPORT
'Artrage expected an image file but did not recognise the format of the selected file. Please coose different image.'
