Why can I not write with the pen?

Hello,
just got this beautiful present Bamboo for Christmas, I was very happy, until I fond out that I cannot write with the pen!

can I only handwrite with windows vista?????
I have windows Xp and it doesnt work at all!

on the coverbox on the outsite stays.. systemrecomonadation
Windows2000,XP or vista!

so that mean I also can handwrite with windows XP
but it doesnt work
