This is a quick sketch on digitized Canson paper. By using the Scanned paper as the bottom layer for color and loading a grayscale version for paper grain, you can boost the realizm of the already amazing AR tools. (See general discussion forum for a link to a tutorial on paper).

Very cool. You are right, the texture is very natural looking indeed.

Ah, that's such a very cool technique. It gives fantastic results.
Thanks very much for showing everyone how to do it.

To me it's wonderful seeing what people can do with the tools.

Thanks a lot David,

I got confused with Pixel Size v Document size.

This is the Texture from the scanned in cover of an art book.
Although the book was maroon colour, I chose to combine the new Texture with a standard ArtRage canvas colour selection.

This is getting to be as fun as painting!

PVIllustration- I'm pleased you agree. This is something that has definately created a shift for me in my thinking about digitally created art.

AndyRage- It feels good to be able to share something like this. All I really did though was take what you guys have created and make it do what it can do. I am thankful to have such a tool.

Aged P- That is exactly what I would recommend to you. Choose the dimensions of your canvas while you are creating it. One thing that I have done several times now is to enlarge my scanned source image by duplicating it several times in Photoshop and moving the copied layers out to the edges of a wider canvas. This way you are not actually scaling the texture just having more of it. Of course you have to do some soft erasing/cloning/healing brush stuff to it to make it all look seamless. It is worth the effort. I hope this helps.

Aged P- Bravo! <grinning from ear to ear> very satisfying to see. Spotlight has to shine on Andy and the rest of the AR team though, they are the ones that made this blazing tool. Thanks guys.

Fashmir,

Great 'illusion' of a toothy paper pencil drawing. Very natural, casual sketch feeling.

By the way, how does this sort of thing print for you? Is it as convincing outside of the computer? I was wondering how the copied paper texture looks, whether on colered 'paper' or white.

I just used an AR painting I did with great thick ol' paint texture as a backdrop stripped into photograph of a figure. I'm going to have it printed shortly at a quick print shop. Crossing my fingers it looks convincing. I had to really crank up the dpi ahead of time from 72 to 300 at print dimensions.

But there was no paper showing through, so it's going to be more an issue of whether the paint looks like paint. So I'm wondering if you have printed this or anything yet.

D Akey- I have not yet done much with print experiments in the area of trying to hold the illusion of natural paper grain. My gut tells me it will look like it is printed on flat paper simply because of the printed page's response to light. If you plan to mount the image on the wall and position it so that it gets lit from the upper left, and if your paper is very flat/matte finish, it may fool the eyes. Let me know what you discover.
