The forum used to have checkmarks for 'unread' items. Did they go away or did I change a setting somewhere??

Oh!...posting something made them show up again.
They weren't there before...I swear : )

I thought that the bits vanishing and reappearing were just a sign of old age. I'm glad someone else noticed them!

When you visit, don't read anything , and leave ...sometimes they vanish, without having read one line.

Make sure that you are logged in. You won't see the check marks unless the forum knows who you are.

They were there and then they went away!

Also make sure you allow 'cookies' for the website.

Definitely something I would expect to see when logged in. Andy's right about the cookies, as the board will allow you to be remembered for a few days, but if you don't see new items when you get to the main page, check that in the navigation menu at the top it has, for example "Log out (DaveRage)" to ensure you're logged in and they should display correctly.
Do feel free to let me know though, if despite this you still see a problem.

As hanzz says, sometimes all it takes is a visit to the forum to mark everything inexplicably read. I haven't noticed that here yet, but I have at other phpBB forums. I'll keep an eye out for odd cookie behaviour.

I've noticed on other forums (but not here yet!) that if you have one forum window open, then open another window to the same board that sometimes the cookies get confused and it marks everything as read. It seems to be a limitation on the PHPBBS system. And it's fairly random - it doesn't happen all the time.

Just got back after a week away.
Cookies are enabled.
A couple pf miutes into catching up and then suddenly everything was marked as being read.
Once it's happened then that's it, no amount of reconnecting or logging on makes any difference.
Clicking Refresh flags up anything that has arrived while I have been connected. The other ticks are gone forever.

Welcome back, Aged P. We missed you while you were gone!
Does the forum allow you to remain automatically logged it, so next time you open the forum you're already logged in?
Can you tell me what web browser you're using?
Thanks.

I've just increased the amount of time the board considers as a session cookies-wise, see if this helps out! In the meantime, definitely the items Andy was curious about could be useful. Thanks for letting us know!

I stay logged on between visits, so cookies seem ok.
IE6.
I'll try and be more methodical and pin down a sequence of events that cause it.

I think I've found the answer.
If you make a lunge for the right hand scroll bar and then glance back to the main screen the cursor ends up on "Mark All Topics As Read".
As you click to start dragging the bar you operate the button and that's it!
Could that "Mark All..." area be moved a little?
If not, is it possible to "Undo" the decision?

Hmm.. I know for sure that I am not accidentally clicking that option. I think it has something to do with session cookies and things of that nature which thoroughly flummox me.
I returned to the forums after nearly two weeks, logged in, and all forums indicated that there were new messages to be read. I started at the top and read through Announcements and General Chat. I was catching up to all the Gallery posts when I decided I needed some sleep. When I returned, several hours later, all the forums beneath Gallery had been marked read. So I guess that though the forums kept me logged in, the session cookie had expired, or something? I dunno... Dave?

Hi Gita,
Having suggested that it was my own fault, I've avoided the Mark All area totally. It does still happen at random. It seems to be connected with going to Forum Index from within a thread, but it's difficult to pin down. Also most irritating, I now think it's a bug again.

Still happening!
I went into the forum and there were lots of marks.
Looked at a few and went to another site.
Clicked the Ambient short-cut on the keyboard.
Automatically logged back in, but only stuff that had changed between the two visits now have check marks.
It has to be a site fault.
